“The story [of Crepuscule W/ Nellie] is, like Monk’s work, unique – strange, dissonant, profane, poetic – and some readers will find its peculiarities difficult to overcome. Stylistic techniques and points of view vary wildly from one scene to the next. Setting and dialogue and characters are introduced with little or no context. Yet these characters are drawn with such empathy that, within just a few pages, we begin to identify with their challenges, and to hope for some sort of resolution.”
“… this novel is a sumptuous symphonic language feast. Yep—truly. You will be dizzyingly drunk, happily drowning in the stuff. Multiple first-person narratives will subsume you in the characters and the effect will make you feel as if you are there, as if you are them.”
“Jazz is known as a musical form without form—improvisation and imagination replace structure and tradition. This novel mimics that concept, using various devices to imagine the relationships among Monk and those closest to him… challenging, unconventional, rewarding…”
